Goal Setting, a Board Responsibility
It is commonly accepted that boards have four responsibilities. In no explicit order, they're goal setting, self-management, monitoring activity, and making policy. Goal setting is one of the additional tough for boards. They struggle with what sort of goals to line, how so much into the long run to look, and how realistic to create the goals.
There are 2 sorts of goals. Performance goals live how the organization operates. Mission goals challenge the organization to reach higher for the benefit of others. Each are measurable.
Performance goals are the foremost common and the most limiting. As a result of the goals relate to the execution of tasks, they are usually set with a sharp eye toward realism and a comparatively short time horizon (less than 3 years). They are goals that stifle creativity, experimentation, and innovation. Reaching the goal is that the reward.
Since the perception is that the goal is realistic, missing the goal is failure. They're goals that encourage excuses, explanations, reasons, and exceptions when missed. External factors are blamed when results are disappointing or a minimum of there's an enquiry for external factors that might are the cause of the disappointment. When missed, there is a sense of victimization and loss of control.
Setting realistic goals seldom leads to overachieving. Typically when the goal is in sight effort begins to slack off and there's a coast to the finish line. The Aesop fable of the Tortoise and Hare may be a common example. The hare tries coasting and is horrified by the results.
Common nonprofit performance goals are increase donations by ten%, increase enrollment by 8%, or raising achievement test scores by three%. Typical timeframes are typically 1 to three years. All are terribly affordable, practical, and understandable. All are equally unlikely to increase sustainability.
A mission goal is typically challenging to reach. It needs innovation, creativity, risk taking, and experimentation. The interim results are the rewards. The interim results are motivational. They conjointly discourage doing what's routine. They challenge everybody to use their information and pull the team closer together. Even missing the goal increases sustainability as a result of the mission is stronger. Additionally, everybody becomes mission driven.
The best in every field (sports, business, art, etc.) are all pursuing goals they are unlikely to reach. All of them feel or felt that they'll and should do better next time. They're dissatisfied with their performance even when it so much outshines what their contemporaries are capable of.
Common nonprofit mission-centric goals are reducing teen pregnancy by half, providing a mentor for one,000 at-risk youth, or providing a hundred villages with safe drinking water. The timeframes for these goals are sometimes many years (five or additional). The challenges are daunting. But, measurable success encourages others to hitch the cause. The growing support will increase sustainability. Since success takes the organization into uncharted waters, it is terribly unlikely that the goal is realistic.
Next Step:
Decide whether or not your organization should pursue performance or mission goals
Establish measurable goals whose achievement are meaningful to the organization, supporters, community, and shoppers
Establish a timeframe for achieving every goal
Do what's necessary to confirm that the organization is correctly resourced to attain success (tools, training, freedom of action, etc.)
Extra challenges common with performance goals are:
They seldom inspire donors to be more generous
They are onerous to elucidate to those outside the organization (clients, referral sources, the community, etc.)
After they fail to increase sustainability, they often build managing subsequent years additional difficult as a result of of short sighted choices necessary to make this year's goal
They make it tough to recruit the upper skilled and passionate staff
They encourage micromanaging by the board
While not goals, the board is left with the mundane tasks of setting policy and monitoring the adherence to policy. This can be one in all the reasons several board members become disengaged, seldom attend conferences, and are marginal participants in organizational activities.
Mission goals are inspirational. It's less necessary for them to be realistic. It is important for them to have broad and enthusiastic support. They take a very long time to be reached, if ever. The long-term commitment means everyone should be enthusiastic and passionate about success.
Those that are great in their field go way beyond liking what they're doing. They love doing it and that they achieve additional as a result of it fuels their love.
Are your goals inspiring your organization to achieve for its greatness?

If average americans were to be exposed to nuclear waste it would be considered a major scandal and get huge media attention. In Illinios, a nuclear leak 2 years ago that later amounted to nothing was all over the news. Proponents of nuclear hope, like you, that nuclear waste will never leak. I think smart engineers can solve this problem and create a safe way to dispose of waste.
Have hope, brother.
boooring, too bad i need to listen to this
i LOVE YOU MY ROCK oBAMA
Nuclear waste is a terrible thing that leads to cancer and other health problems. 45 new nuclear plants will cause a large health bill in future years.
go Obahma! this is exactly what I’ve been thinking since i was ten.

This is Obama at his least captivating. At least Al Gore used slideshows. C’mon, Barack, throw me a freakin’ bone here!
The most idiotic candidate in history you must drill and pursue all forms of energy not just few.
America needs this guy, badly. Listening to McCain makes me wanna go sleep, unlike Obama who seems to be the most intelligent presidential candidate in history.
I agree with Obama Germany has become a world leader when it comes to renewable energy. Even China appears to be ahead of the USA in this area. George Bush is only about militarization of America.
What’s Obama going to do about the Fed?
I can’t wait for the debating between Obama and McBush to start. Obama is going to wipe the floor with McBush’s face!
The box to solve multiple problems with few well thought out plans love it obama 08.
The problem with nuclear energy is just paranoia except for terrorist attacks.
